Primarily found in the Kugitang Mountains, specifically in southeastern Uzbekistan.
The Kugitang, also known as Koytendag, is a mountain range in Central Asia, specifically within the Pamir-Alai mountain system. It extends along the border of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and is known for its dramatic landscapes, including deep canyons, caves, and the highest peak in Turkmenistan, Mount Ayrybaba (3,139 m). The range is also home to the Kugitang Nature Reserve, recognized for its unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
Description
Males have long, twisted horns that can reach impressive lengths, and long hair on their chin, throat, chest, and shanks.
Habitat
Prefers mountainous areas, including alpine grasslands and fragile cave systems.
Remarks
The Kugitang markhor is a flagship species for conservation efforts in the region. Hence, the addition of the Kugitang markhor to GSCO’s Capra milestones is the result of an extensive on-going collaboration with Falcon Hunting Solutions and the Uzbekistan wildlife authorities, emphasizing species awareness, conservation efforts, and habitat preservation.
