Location
- Distribution: these sheep are widely distributed throughout Western Europe.
Description
The Multi-horned Sheep is a woolly, short-tailed breed known since biblical times.
- Size: they reach a shoulder height of approximately 34 inches (86 cm) and weigh between 100–125 pounds (45–57 kg).
- Horns: males typically possess four individual horns growing from separate bases. Occasionally, specimens may have five or six horns. The upper pair is larger and grows in various directions, while the lower pair is smaller and usually Mouflon-shaped.
- Coloration: they are found in a wide variety of colors.
- Remarks
- Behavior and Defense: these sheep have poor eyesight and rely on “bunching up” as their primary defense mechanism.
- Diet and Hydration: primarily a browser, they consume weeds and occasionally tender grasses. They require daily water during the summer but can go up to three days without it in cooler months.
- Breeding: conception occurs mainly in the late spring. Dominance is established through head-butting. This physical contact can be dangerous, as horns sometimes become permanently entangled, leading to the death of both males by starvation.
