Location
The species inhabits mainland Europe, excluding Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula, and extends eastward to Crimea and southern Russia. Additionally, European red deer have been established in various Russian hunting reserves outside their indigenous range.
Red deer inhabiting England, Ireland, and Scotland south of the Glasgow-Edinburgh line are categorized here as English red deer. While biologists formally classify the southern Scottish populations as Scottish red deer, they are grouped with the larger English form in this context due to potential hybridization.
Description
Representing the largest of the red deer, the most impressive specimens—noted for their substantial body mass and antler quality originate from Poland, Hungary, Romania, and the Balkan region. Record-breaking stags have reached weights of 272–300 kg, sporting characteristically dark antlers that can feature over 20 points. These racks often weigh more than 10 kg with the frontal bone attached, or up to 12 kg as a cleaned skull.
Remarks
The peak of the roar in the Eastern European mountains offers the most premier hunting experience. In ideal conditions, hunters are surrounded by some of the world’s finest stags, featuring antler quality so exceptional that such specimens are often beyond the reach of most enthusiasts.
